Share your views on Glade Stream Restoration

The purpose of this Blog is to keep the citizens of Hunters Woods, Reston informed as to the progress and consequences of the Reston Stream Restoration, which will impact the Glade preserve. As a monitor of the site, I will do my best to provide both sides of the issue. As residents of Reston, I fully expect you to state your views as frankly and professionally as you see them. It is only through an informed citizen participation will we maintain the quality of life that is unique to Reston. I for one would like to restore streams, but I want to do so with limited impact on the trees and wildlife. Is that possible, what are your views on Glade Stream Restoration?

While the issues surrounding accountability for this project need specific attention, lets not lose site about the goal. This is not about the "number of trees to be removed". The goal is to restore the stream to a profile that will allow buffering of storm flow, reducing erosion, reduce lowering of the water table that will sustaining stream side vegetation, reducing nutrient flow to the Chesapeake Bay system. Trees in the planned flood plain are at risk as part of the restoration.

We should ensure that the contractor's plan endorses a minimal footprint, but counting trees is not the right approach. Minimize the size of staging areas, ensure the selected stream path is the most sustainable, and ensure the restoration plantings will be beneficial, viable, and allow quick recovery from the construction impacts.

If the project is well managed and is implemented within the approved plans, our forest system will quickly start recovering from the intrusiveness of the construction process. But we have to agree that the trade-offs between stream and forest are beneficial and sustainable.

Now I know why the coyote and fox have moved into
my friend's backyard...habitat destruction. There will be other consequences of this forest clearing which
will also require solutions. One hopes that
these have all been considered.

I have not bought a ticket for the entire premise. For me, its simple risk managment. I certainly have not done enough research to know who's right, but if I heard correctly, and there is at least a 50/50 split as whether or not this will even be effective, the buy in of any substantial loss of over 1500 trees in Glade is too much.

Having said this, I believe the fact is the train may have left the station, anyone thinking the meeting tonight was anything but veiled concern to avoid full out PR nightmare is kidding themselves.
